The Disadvantages of Weight Machines
By: G.A. Page CPT, CSCS
A well-balanced and fitness-filled lifestyle involves several different components. One of the main components is resistance training. Resistance training is available through several different avenues. Barbells, dumbbells, body weight training and weight machines all have their application in your continued drive to improve your health and quality of life.
Corn, Tomatoes, and Turkeys
Saturday was a very busy day on the property. After a very cold week of freezing temperatures it was finally time to plant our corn and tomatoes. Several weeks ago, I posted an article about starting corn indoors and getting the plants ready for planting. You can read that article here. Now that the temperatures are warming back up and no freezing temperatures are in the long-range forecast, it’s time to get these little guys planted so that we can have some late-spring, early-summer sweet corn.
So, you are out in the wild and all of your fire starting and fire building practice has paid off. You have a really nice fire going keeping you and your loved ones warm. You are able to cook some supper and purify a few canteens full of water for the next day’s journey. With a full belly, you plan on hitting the rack after completing an inspection and survey of your gear. As you are inventorying your fire staring resources you notice that you have very few waterproof matches left. Concerned, you have a warm, but restless night, worrying about your diminishing fire building capabilities.
Resistance Training and Cardio…A Balanced Approach
Many people have questions regarding whether they should do cardio or workout with weights. Both are great ways to burn fat, lose weight, increase endurance, and create overall better base fitness. However, a well-balanced fitness plan should be just that; a balance between cardio and resistance training.
The Five-Gallon Bucket
So you’ve been to the big box stores recently and you’ve started buying bulk items such as rice, sugar, salt, etc… Now you have all these big, awkward bags of food sitting around and you realize that your new supplies look and feel disorganized. How are you supposed to store all this stuff in a neat and orderly fashion while preserving your stores effectively? The answer is the bucket!
Treadmill Training Basics
Walk in to any gym or fitness center and one of the first things you notice is an endless line of treadmills along one of the walls of the facility. Often times you may even see two or three levels of them. This is for a very good reason. The treadmill is one of the most popular pieces of aerobic equipment out there. The treadmill is so popular because it offers an outstanding indoor platform for users to address cardio needs in the comfort of air-conditioning or heat, safely away from environmental hazards such as weather and traffic. If you’re just starting to create positive change in your lifestyle and looking for a good place to start with your cardio workouts then the treadmill might be the perfect place to begin.
Canned Food Storage
Growing up in Florida was never a dull experience, especially during hurricane season. Without fail, it seemed that every August or September there was some type of threat heading our direction. Until Andrew struck in 1992, preparation was primitive at best. It was the standard process…go outside and put everything from the yard away, make sure you have some flashlights and a radio, put masking tape on the windows (yeah, really!), fill up a tub with water, and run to the grocery store and stock up on canned goods. Some of these strategies still apply today (NOT the masking tape), especially storing canned goods.
The Stability Ball
By: G.A. Page CPT, CSCS
Good Saturday Morning. I'm currently down in Mexico City working and just finished up with the morning workout. I had a great core workout with a stability ball at the hotel gym. I have a little free time on my hands today so I figured I would share an older article I wrote a couple years back about the stability ball.
If you’re looking for an inexpensive but effective piece of training equipment that can be used in the privacy of your home, or in a gym environment, then it is time to consider acquiring a stability ball. The stability ball offers great latitude to the user as it has so many diverse uses. Stability balls can be quite effective in targeting just about every body part while constantly strengthening the user’s core. Other than using free weights there probably is no other workout device that performs so many different functions.
Travel Safely When Visiting Foreign Countries
We absolutely love living in a very rural area. Even drives into the nearest town leaves us looking forward to getting back to our home in the woods as quickly as possible. Living in our dream home in the woods is not free though and we still must generate income to keep the lights on. Fortunately, we can run a successful security consulting and investigations business from our home. Operating this business requires periodic travel often to areas outside the United States. Because of this the sky miles add up quickly and so does the experience of travelling outside the borders.
One area of travelling that is always of great concern is personal safety. Let’s face it…the world can be a scary place and legitimate threats do exist once you leave the security of your home and travel to unfamiliar places. With all my international travel experience to some less than savory places I thought I would share some foreign travel safety tips that might help keep you safe while travelling abroad.
Is Low-Back Pain Keeping You from Activities?
Low-back pain is a very common malady in the United States. This type of pain is so commonplace that it is the second-most reported reason for people missing work, second only to the common cold. Tens of millions of Americans suffer from low-back pain and in addition to people missing work, it is also one of the top reasons for people presenting to doctors’ offices and emergency rooms. Even folks that are living an active, fitness-based lifestyle often fall victim to low-back pain. If you are suffering from low-back pain there are certain measures you can take that may help alleviate the discomfort and prevent future issues.
Self Reliance Tip
Contour Lines – When reading a contour map carefully observe the contour lines. The more compressed the lines are, the steeper the terrain will be and the harder it will be for you to negotiate.
